How To Lose Weight On Vacation

How many of us have gained weight on vacation or know someone that has?  This is too common of an occurrence and something that we have come to expect as normal.  We tend to “forget” everything we know on vacation in terms of health.  We eat too much and make poor food choices.  We tend to get lazy.  Many of us enjoy being waited on hand and foot.  When we get home, and step on the scale, we disappoint ourselves and become frustrated with the setback.   Why do we do this to ourselves?

The answer is easy.  We are mentally unprepared when going on vacation.  We need to change our train of thought and realize that we can still enjoy vacation without eating like a pig.  In fact, you will probably enjoy your vacation even more if you are not stuffed to the point of feeling uncomfortable.  If you eat less sugary food and drinks, you won’t have energy lows where you want to nap.  You will be able to sightsee and get your money’s worth out of your vacation.

Challenge yourself to lose weight on your next vacation, or at the bare minimum maintain your weight.  Please read the following tips for how to make this possible:

  • Tell the people you are going on vacation with that you want to lose weight.  This way they won’t pressure you to eat and drink more.
  • Eat slow and enjoy your food.  You will feel fuller faster and won’t feel the urge to grab seconds.
  • Share a meal or ask for only ½ of it; bring the rest back to your hotel.
  • Limit alcoholic drinks and sugary drinks (soda, lemonade, fruit juice).
  • Don’t eat more than you would if you were at home.  Get out of the mindset that vacations mean “eat everything and anything”.
  • Take advantage of any fitness related activities or equipment your hotel has.  Ask at the front desk when you check in.
  • Walk to attractions if they are close instead of taking a cab or bus.
  • Swim in the pool/ocean or at least walk in it while you cool off.
  • Exercise in your hotel room- crunches, pushups, lunges, squats don’t require any equipment.  If you want to do more extensive exercise, bring an exercise band.
  • Go for a walk every morning or evening.  Walk a different direction each time and explore the area you are vacationing in.

Print these tips out and place them in your suitcase.  You will be ready to lose weight on your next vacation guaranteed.
