Commonly, low-fat or nonfat food choices are lower in calories than the same size portion of the full-fat product. However, many processed low-fat or nonfat foods have just as many calories as the full-fat version of the same food, sometimes even more calories. These processed low-fat or nonfat foods may contain added sugar, flour, or starch thickeners to improve flavor and texture after fat is removed. These ingredients add significant calories.
The key is to read your food labels. Double check the serving sizes. Many times the only reason low-fat or nonfat foods claim low calories is because the serving sizes are listed as much smaller then the full-fat version.
